If one word was used to describe the drumming of Tris Imboden, that word might be “timing.”

Imboden, who has worked with dozens of respected bands and artists through the years, currently holds down the drum kit for the classic band Chicago. He’s also a producer and songwriter whose talents have earned him great respect.

Imboden was born July 27, 1951. When he was 5, Imboden was inspired to take up the drums by watching a marching band. He began playing with surf bands in and around his Orange County, Calif., home while still a teenager, and eventually found himself part of a locally popular group called “Other Half.” When he graduated high school, Imboden joined an eclectic group named “Honk” who took their inspiration from jazz and folk influences, in addition to rock.

In 1977, Imboden joined the backup group for Kenny Loggins, and for a dozen years he toured and recorded with them. Later, his work with jazz great Al Jarreau broadened Imboden’s improv skills and gained him more attention on the international music scene. That exposure – and the evidence that Imboden could impeccably play numerous styles of music -- helped him land live and studio sessions with artists and groups like: Michael McDonald; Julio Iglesias; Stevie Wonder; Crosby, Stills & Nash; Neil Diamond; Richard Marx; Brian Wilson; guitar legend Steve Vai; and saxophonist David Sanborn.

Since 1990, Imboden has been the percussionist for Chicago. He also shares his knowledge and experience with other drummers through clinics and workshops.
