Terry Silverlight has made his mark on music not only as a drummer, but as a bandleader, composer, producer, arranger and educator in almost every style of music. Silverlight got started in the field quite early. In 1971, at only 14 years of age, he played on his brother Barry Miles’ album “White Heat,” considered by some observers to be a groundbreaking recording and a harbinger of the jazz fusion movement. Since that auspicious debut, Silverlight has worked all over the world with an array of artists from all genres. His list of collaborations – many of them on gold and platinum records – includes names like Billy Ocean, George Benson, Natalie Merchant, Freddie Jackson, Tom Jones, Anne Murray, Mel Torme, and Jennifer Holladay. He has toured extensively with artists such as Roberta Flack, and has performed with the award-winning Manhattan Jazz Orchestra. Silverlight also is a noted studio artist for movie scores. His work has appeared on the soundtracks of “One Fine Day,” “You’ve Got Mail,” “Titus,” “Frida,” “Object of My Affection,” “Slaves of New York,” and “What Planet Are You From.” His drumming also provides the beat for countless TV programs and commercial jingles. When not behind the drum set, Silverlight is a noted writer, producer and arranger of music. His pieces have appeared on network TV shows ranging from day- and nighttime soap operas (“One Life to Live,” “All My Children,” “The Young and the Restless,” and “Melrose Place”) to “Beverly Hills 90210” and “The Sopranos.” He composed jingles for Reebok, Nicorette, Pantene and Crisco Canola, wrote songs for the films “Invincible (Mark Wahlberg), “Marci X” (Lisa Kudrow), “Mad About Mambo” (Keri Russell) and “Head Over Heels” (Freddie Prinze Jr. and Monica Potter). His songs have been recorded by Les McCann, Nancy Wilson of Heart, Carl Anderson, Judy Torres and Philip Ingram. Silverlight has released two solo CDs, one a self-titled offering and the other called “Wild!!” He composed and arranged all music for both. The CDs feature guest performances by Will Lee, Paul Shaffer, Edgar Winter, Lew Soloff, Chuck Loeb, Hiram Bullock and, in a turning of the tables, Silverlight’s brother, Barry Miles, who gave him his first recording break at age 14. As an educator, Silverlight’s drum book “The Featured Drummer” is packaged with an audio CD of the author playing each exercise, accompanied by his brother on keyboards and John Patitucci on bass. Silverlight’s latest book is “The Stick Bag Book of Jazz, Funk, Fusion.” Silverlight endorses Gretcsch drums, Paiste cymbals, Pro-Mark drumsticks and Evans drumheads. |
