ImageThree jazz giants, pianist Oscar Peterson, bassist Ray Brown, and vibist Milt Jackson spent their Thanksgiving together in 1998 at the Blue Note in New York City , in what is considered by many; a landmark collaboration. These seasoned professionals along with a solid young drummer, Karriem Riggins, who displayed some great accent control while keeping it all steady, made for an intense quartet. What’s Up? is basically a jam session as these men had very little history playing together. The result was spontaneous, electrifying and rich with a sense of history.

During The Very Tall Band’s three night gig, there was plenty of outstanding material performed that did not make the final cut; Telarc International located and put together what they believe represents the feel of those historic nights. The tracks, both mellow and upbeat, showcase each member’s individuality. Take “Salt Peanuts” for example, which showcases Milt Jackson’s amazing vibe work and Ray Brown’s subtle bass lines. Also, “Squatty Roo”, a very upbeat opening number that grooves effortlessly and gets everyone going, and “The More I See You”, which brings out the soloing magic of each performer.

Sadly, Milt Jackson died in 1999, only a year after this performance and Ray Brown died in 2002. Among the many creative treasures left behind, The Very Tall Band’s What’s Up is one for keeps.
