While watching the scene in Clint Eastwood’s hit movie, “Million Dollar Baby,” where Maggie the boxer attempts to work on her drooping left hand by binding it in a proper defensive position, I realized that the drumming community rarely utilizes this mechanical approach to establishing muscle memory…until now! Local Washington, DC regional drummer Steve Barke recognized a frequent problem with his students playing matched grip- the space between the thumb and first finger would tense and close, frequently leading to blisters and technique problems as the stick creeps out of the first joint position and causes friction against the skin.
